Install DimSum

DimSum Takeoff is a desktop app that runs on your own computer. Installing it takes a minute, and you can be on Home, ready to start a job, right after.

What you need

  • A Windows PC. DimSum runs on Windows today. macOS and Linux versions are Coming.
  • Some free disk space. Plan sets can be large, and each job keeps its plans inside its own file.

Steps

  1. Get the installer. For now the Windows installer (an .exe) comes to you from Planbase directly. Downloading it from your account at planbaseestimating.com is Coming.
  2. Run the installer. Double-click the .exe and follow its steps; you can keep the suggested folder or pick another. The installer isn't signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you: click More info, then Run anyway. A signed installer is Coming.
  3. Already have DimSum? Run the newer installer over the old copy. Your jobs, tools and reports are left as they are.
  4. Open DimSum from the desktop shortcut or the Start menu.
  5. You land on Home. It has three big buttons: New Job (Ctrl+N), Open Job (Ctrl+O) and Import plans into a new job (Ctrl+I). With no jobs yet, Home says so and points you at those buttons.
  6. Look over your settings. Press Ctrl+, to open System Settings. This is where your number display, markup looks, stamps, labels and the Reports folder live. The defaults are fine to start with.
  7. Start your first job. Head to the next page.

TIP

Keep the installer somewhere handy. Running it again is also how you repair or update DimSum for now.

Good to know

  • A job is one file. Each job is a single .dsum file in your Jobs folder (DimSum Jobs, in your Documents, unless you pick another place). Copy it, back it up or move it like any file.
  • Your work saves as you go. Every click and change is written to the job as you make it. There's no draft to lose.
  • A guided first-run setup that walks you through your license, units, your name and company, and starter libraries is Coming. Until then DimSum starts with sensible defaults.
  • Trial and licensing are Coming: a 14-day trial with every feature and no card needed (reports exported during the trial carry a small watermark), and each seat on up to 2 machines.
  • Signing in and automatic updates are Coming. For now, update by running the newer installer.
