Keep DimSum up to date

DimSum updates itself. It looks for a new version when it starts and every few hours, downloads it in the background, and puts it in when you're ready, never in the middle of your work.

Steps

  1. Open About / Updates. Press Ctrl+, for System Settings and pick About / Updates. It shows the version you're running, Installed for: Just you, the update Status and Last checked.
  2. Check now, if you like. Click Check now to look straight away. Otherwise DimSum checks by itself shortly after it opens.
  3. Wait for Restart to update. A new version downloads while you work, with a progress bar here. When it's ready, a Restart to update button appears in the top bar.
  4. Restart when it suits you. Finish what you're doing and click Restart to update, then Restart now. DimSum saves and closes your job, installs the update with no Windows prompt, and opens the same job again. Pick Later to keep working.
  5. Or just close DimSum. A ready update installs when you close DimSum, and it's there the next time you open it.
  6. Read What's new. After an update the top bar says Updated to the new version. Click it to see What's new in About / Updates.

TIP

If you click Restart to update while you're drawing a shape or have a dialog open, it says Finish what you're doing first and waits. Nothing is ever lost: DimSum saves every change as you make it.

Stable or Beta

  • Stable (the default) gets a new version once it has been tried.
  • Beta gets new versions first, and always has at least what Stable has.
  • Change it with Update channel in About / Updates. It takes effect at once, with no Save.
  • Switching back to Stable never takes you back to an older version. You stay where you are until Stable catches up, and the Status says so.

Good to know

  • No Windows Yes prompt. DimSum is installed just for your Windows user, so updates need no administrator permission.
  • Offline is fine. With no internet the Status says You're offline. DimSum checks again when you're back online., and it does, by itself.
  • New versions can arrive in stages. If the Status says a version is rolling out, it reaches your computer soon, with nothing for you to do.
  • An older copy installed for all users (in Program Files) can't update itself. DimSum tells you once, and About / Updates keeps an Older copy row with Open Apps settings. To remove it, close DimSum, then go to Windows Settings → Apps, uninstall that older DimSum Takeoff, and say Yes once. Your jobs, settings and libraries are shared, so nothing is lost.
  • Critical fixes are marked with a red Restart to update button and a Critical fix tag in What's new. Install those soon.
  • The installer isn't signed yet. Windows may warn about an installer you run yourself (More info, then Run anyway). Updates DimSum downloads itself don't show the warning.
